Here is a list of various places I visit. I've tried to avoid the obvious places. This is a work in progress.
- Philip Glass - I'm a big fan of his and I'm the only person I know that is. He is far and away the foremost composer of the 20th century in my opinion. He has been given the label of a "minimalist" composer based on his early compositions in the late 1960s and 1970s, but I really think its a misnomer today. He did the scores for "The Truman Show" and "Kundun", and scores of other movies you probably haven't seen. He's also done a lot of operatic work, changing the notion of what is an opera. His best known stage score was for "Einstein on the Beach", but has done many others. You can listen to part of the score written for piano and strings for "The Hours".
- Philip Glass Official site - Even if you don't like his music, check out the glass engine in the upper right corner. It is the coolest interface for exploring music I've ever seen.
- alt.music.philip-glass - The only real place I've found where fans of his music communicate with each other. Not that I expect there to be a lot of them.
- GlassPages.org - The best fan site. Check out the "web logo". It is a short 15 second theme that Philip wrote for the website, written for horns. How cool is that? It sort of reminds me of the Rocky and Bullwinkle theme.
- Jim Rogers - He's a commentator on CNBC and a writer for some financial magazines. That is not what's interesting about this site however. This site is the daily text/photo/audio/video diary of the three year trip he and his wife made around the world in a car.
- Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg is one of my favorite shows. I have Tivo record it every night. The subjects are totally eclectic and more often than not are things I'm interested in. Who else talks about population demographics one day and the legacy of Irving Berlin the next?
- Reef Keeping is one of my hobbies. My 175 gallon marine aquarium is sort of the first thing you see as you walk into my house. I once had a very attractive woman named Shawn who was going door to door getting people to sign up for the Sierra Club. When she came to my door she saw the aquairum and we ended up talking for about an hour. Needless to say, I'm a sucker and she got a new Sierra Club member. If anyone from the Sierra Club is reading this, if you want me to renew, use the methods employed previously.
- Reef Central unquestionably has the most active forum in the marine aquarium community. Its so popular that its really gettin bogged down by the traffic. There are forums with honest to goodness marine biologists as well as forums dedicated to SPS, clams, nano tanks, and local clubs.
- Reefs.org probably has the 2nd most active discussion group.
- Advanced Aquarist's Magazine is an online magazine with excellent articles. This shouldn't be confused with...
- Reefkeeping Magazine which also has wonderful articles by gurus like Dr Ron Schimeck and Eric Borneman.
- Twin Cities Marine Aquarium Society
- I love the business model at Indo Pacific Sea Farms. They raise and sell things like snails and worms that live in sand. Its a fantastic company if you have a deep sand bed.
- PVP Online is written by my friend Scott Kurtz. It is becoming massively popular. I will be able to say, I knew him when.
- Mensa US and Mensa Minnesota. Yes, I'm in Mensa.
